You put the kettle on (Cue) You get a craving for hobnobs (Craving) You devour half pack of hobnobs (Response) You satisfy that craving through a half pack of hobnobs and you now associate putting the kettle on with eating hobnobs (Reward) Repeat. This is how habits (both "good" and "bad") are formed and strengthened. Ninety-three percent of the individuals I surveyed reported doing some type of exercise. Most individuals reported walking and strength training, while others do yoga, pilate, swimming or biking to reduce their pain. Studies have shown that exercise helps manage pain by releasing endorphins which is the body’s natural pain killer (WebMD & Medical News Today). As for me, after three cervical spinal surgeries, I went back to strength training. The doctor gave me the go ahead after the last surgery as long as I isolate the muscle I train so that I don’t use my neck or back. I listen to my body and lift very light weights with multiple repetitions.
